Grading Forums and Assignments with an Attached Marking Guide

Modified on Mon, 21 Sep 2020 at 02:43 PM

A Marking Guide provides a way to mark whether each criterion in an assignment has been met, and allows a range of points to be assigned to various criteria for the assignment being assessed.

Refer to the Instructor’s Notes page in the Support Resources folder found on the Course Home of your teaching course shell, in order to know which assignments utilize marking guides. There are many ways to access a marking guide for grading. This help will show you how to access marking guides from the Joule and Module Grader.

Grading Forum Discussions

Grading for discussions now takes place inside each discussion activity. Please follow these instructions to complete discussion grading.

  1. Navigate to the discussion forum you would like to grade. Select Grade Users below the discussion title.
Note: In some discussion formats, the Grade Users button may be below the discussion prompt.

  2. Navigate to the student you would like to grade. A student list is available by clicking the magnifying glass icon.

  3. The page will load with the grading interface as well as any posts by the student in the discussion. Review the student’s posts (A), view details about the criterion (B), enter a score (C), add additional grading comments or open the Frequently Used Comments by selecting the plus icon (D) and select your comments from the dropdown list (E).

  4. When you have completed your grading for the student, select Save at the top of the page.

Grading Assignments

Marking Guides appear at the bottom of their related assignment page.  Students can see the same except for the View/Grade All Submissions link. Under Submission Status, you will find information on the Grading Status, assignment due date, time remaining on the assignment, and the grading criteria. You will access the Module Grader, by selecting the Grade button on the assignment page.

The marking guide will display as a table on one side of the screen.

  1. To make the marking guide larger, select its Expand / arrow icon (to dock the marking guide, select the icon again).

  2. To change the view of the page, choose between the three options: Collapse review panelRestore default panel, and Collapse grade panel

You can grade within the expanded view or docked view. Enter any number within the range of points for each criterion listed within the marking guide.

Provide the student with specific feedback on the scores they receive by clicking the Insert frequently used comment button

You can add further comments for each criterion, to provide detailed feedback about the assessment in the Instructor Feedback criterion remark box.

When you have finished grading the student, select Save changes

A pop-up notification will show that you have successfully saved the student’s grades and feedback in the marking guide.

To finish grading your remaining students, go to the right-hand side of the page and select Change user from the pull-down menu. When you are finished, you can go back to assignment or to the course shell by selecting the course name or assignment title at the top of left-hand side of the screen.

Viewing Turnitin Originality Report in the Module Grader
(If Enabled on Assignment)

Some submission assignments in your course may have the Turnitin Originality Checker enabled. If they do, the originality score will show up under the submitted file name on the View All Submissions page or on the Module Grader page.

To view the originality report, click on the percentage score, as shown in each of the examples below. This will open the Turnitin document viewer in a new window.

Note: do not complete any grading in the Turnitin document viewer. All grading needs to be completed in the marking guide, rubric, or checklist that is attached to the assignment.
