Extending Access to a Lab or Assessment (Quiz Override)

Modified on Mon, Nov 25, 2024 at 8:43 AM

We use a quiz engine in Moodle for several different activities like labs or assessments.

Lab/Assessment Overrides Policies

Lab/assessment overrides can be applied to activities other than those occurring within Week 8. Extensions beyond the Friday of Week 8 need to be submitted by the student as a request for an Incomplete Grade that the Assistant Dean must approve. It is crucial to know whether the student has previously attempted the activity before you apply Overrides.

Suppose a student declares a disability and requests time extensions. In that case, you must refer the student to the LAPU’s Accessibility Office to have the disability documented so that appropriate reasonable accommodations can be applied to all coursework in all courses in which the student is enrolled. However, this process has to be managed and documented by the University.

Extending Lab/Assessment Deadlines, Time, or Attempts

You can extend a lab/assessment deadline, grant more time, or allow students to make another attempt (within the deadline). To do so, first, access the Labs or Assessments page from the Activities block. Then, select one of the labs/assessments in the list that displays.

Note: the activity block may be found on the right side or in the footer of the course, depending on the course page.

Finding the Lab/Assessment Override Controls

On the Lab/Assessment page, select More (1) and Overrides (2).

Adding a Lab/Assessment Override

Select the Add user override button to display the Lab/Assessment Override controls.

To adjust a student’s Lab/Assessment settings, search for the student's name in the Override users field. Then change the Close the Lab or Assessment date and time. A minimum 48-hour extension is typically set up, although longer can be set if warranted.

NOTE: If the student has previously attempted the activity, you must also change the “Attempts Allowed” to 2 or one more than what is already set.

Do not change the Time Limit without checking in with the Assistant Dean, as this setting is only adjusted for students who have declared and been approved to receive reasonable accommodations associated with a confirmed disability. Repeat the previous steps for each student individually.

Then select the Save button before navigating away from the page. A new page will display the override you set up. It can be edited further if a mistake or the extension's circumstances change.

Lab/Assessments with Time Restrictions

If you have followed the previous steps and the student cannot access their activity, the activity may have a time restriction set. Find the applicable Lab/Assessment from the course home to see if a time restriction is set. Below the activity look for the word “Restricted” followed by a date. If you see this and the activity reset falls outside the listed restriction time, Digital Learning Solutions will need to reset the activity. Please contact DLS by submitting a support request to the DLS Support Form to help reset the activity.
